To be perfectly honest, I totally spaced on checking the nutrition facts (good for me, bad for you), but 18Rabbits.com has all the information you need. Some adjectives of choice: authentic, natural, real, nutritious, wholesome. I'll also add delicious, because they are. This is me eating the Funky Figs and Cherries bar while out shopping on Sunday. I look kind of annoyed, but I think this is just because I'm not used to taking pictures of myself eating something. I don't know how you food bloggers do it. Why does my hand look so huge?
I loved it. These have my ideal bar texture -- chewy, but not too soft or too hard. I ate this kind of fast because I was on a shoe mission, but I really enjoyed it. The chunks of cherries and figs were great. It filled me up until I got home, which was my goal.
I know lots of people in recovery from eating disorders have a love-hate relationship with bars. They equate bars with "recovery refeeding," kind of like Boost or Ensure in food format. My affair with Luna bars began in treatment, after all. Personally, I love bars. I'm somewhat lazy, so having something that's quick and easy, especially when I'm at work, is kind of essential. I have 2-3 snacks per day, and one of them usually involves a bar. For most of my snacks, I combine TWO things from this list (for example, I'd have a string cheese and ak-maks with a piece of fruit, or a bar and a glass of chocolate soy milk):
- -String cheese and ak-mak crackers
- -Trader Joe's packet of almonds or trail mix (I love that they have these in snack portions)
- -Gourmet popcorn (Gourmet or go home, that's what I say. My cats agree)
- -Clif Z Bar
- -Chocolate soy milk (Trader Joe's has these in single servings too)
- -Juice
- -Yogurt
- -Cottage cheese
- -Chips: My favorites are tortilla chips, Sun chips, Trader Joe's sweet potato chips
- -Carrots and hummus
- -Luna bar
- -Piece of fruit: I usually go for apples, oranges, pears, bananas
- -Bowl of granola with soy milk
- -Bowl of ice cream, or frozen yogurt with toppings (nuts, granola, berries, chocolate chips)
- -Cookie
I'm much more flexible than I used to be. I change these up pretty often, and I'm always looking for new ideas. I used to have a set meal plan that dictated what my snacks would be, exactly. Now, I see what I feel like when snack time comes and I consult a mental list of options. Snacks have been pretty important to me in recovery. Unless I go out to a meal and eat a lot more than usual, I need to have snacks. My body is pretty used to that, so it's not as much of a struggle as it used to be. My biggest red flag is the disappearance of snacks. That's always the first thing to go when I'm struggling. I was never really a meal skipper, but I'm notorious for skipping snacks.
What about you? What are your favorite snacks?

Today's gratitude:
1. You guys! Thanks for all your encouragement regarding The Things. I slept in today instead of doing my usual walk or yoga. I admit it was hard. I was kind of out of it. I really do love my morning routine! Oh well. I actually used a few spare minutes to cuddle with the kitties in bed and jot down some writing ideas.
2. I have a fun-sounding freelance thing that just came my way.
3. We're watching "Up in the Air" tonight!
4. It's another beautiful day in Southern California.
5. I really have nothing stressing me out. At all.

I have similar snacks ideas as u....i combine at least 2-4 of the stuff from the list ...yep, 3 big meals and 3 big snacks + more a day...i hope one day to look forward to it versus think "how is this going to fit in"...i am big on trail mixes and nut butter though...ever try medjool dates stuffed with nut butter...good.
Up in the Air is such a great movie! Hope you enjoy it! And I love the 18 Rabbits bars- the texture is perfect! I'm a huge snacker myself- my favourites:
-TJ mocha/chocolate yoghurt with chocolate covered banana bits/espresso beans
-Greek yoghurts (flavoured or plain) usually with fruit or cereal bits or whatever
-Luna Protein bars
-Kashi trail mix bars with almond butter
-Hummus & Crackers
-English muffin with cream cheese
-Frozen yoghurt and toppings (midnight moo chocolate sauce/various PBs/nutella/berries/cacao nibs/etc)
-Dates with nutbutters
-Whatever I have in my fridge :)
I am not a big bar person, for a while I was eating Larabars here and there and those are good, but I just forget to buy bars! That being said, these look really delicious.
Up in the Air is great, you are going to love it!
Can you throw me some fun freelance work? And a stress free day? Please?
we have some snacks in common and i'm a HUGE bar fan. here we go:
genisoy bar
balance bar
hot n' healthy bar
microwave popcorn
string cheese
slim a bear
grapefruit
banana
dry cereal
vitatops or muffins
jello
I'm loving the snack ideas. I always need good snacks :)
I don't tend to eat bars but that's purely because of the list of ridiculous length of foods that I'm supposed to avoid. I would do if I got the chance because I am lazy as heck when it comes to snacks, I eat whatever comes to hand first! Maybe I'll try making some Katie friendly ones :P What I usually have is a couple of biscuits and a piece of fruit, or rice cakes with cashew butter and jam, or...cake if there's any around!
I think I missed commenting on your last post because my head wasn't working properly but good luck with your sedentary couple of weeks and I hope your back heals quickly :)
I loved Up in the Air. I am so going to marry George Clooney someday...
One of my big nutritional vices is that I don't snack between meals, but tend to be too unmotivated to cook in the evening and have snacky foods (ie, fruit, yogurt, and a couple of bars of some sort) for dinner. Ok, I think that is actually two vices. It's interesting, though, because when I'm out of my normal routine I do tend to eat lighter meals and more snacks in between. ESPECIALLY when I am doing camping or hiking for my research, I tend to eat much more intuitively in general at those times. For me, best snacks are not that exciting: yogurt, bars, cereal, oatmeal, and always some kind of fruit. I also have a sweet tooth (one ironic thing is that I continued to eat junk food even during bad times with anorexia, as long as it fit into my calorie total) and am a huge sucker for ice cream, dark chocolate and Reese's peanut butter cups. ;)
I really want to try these!
My new fave snack is roasted chickpeas with a piece of fruit. I like to have two things together too. I also like cold cereal :) And homemade crackers and granola bars.
Yay for cuddling with the kitties!
I can't wait until we get Up in the Air on Netflix!
I loved "Up in the Air," so if you don't like it as well, something is wrong with you...or me. Probably both. Anyway, I feel compelled to comment not because I'm a big creative snacker, but because I have cut the afternoon one out the past few months and I know that's a BIG part of my slide (basically four meals instead of three and two snacks.)
I will NEVER miss a meal, but I always rationalize that snacks can be skipped if I "make up" for it later. Right...but when I do, it's pretty much the same snack list as yours. I like Larabars, if I have to do the bar thing, and am finally over associating both cottage cheese and graham crackers with treatment. Friggen finally.
Yay for sleeping in! I avoided the gym today to, mentally telling myself it was out of sympathy for you, prescribed not to go ;)
Oooh, snacks. A topic close to my heart. Theemptynutjar and sprinkledwithcinnamon are my new heroes for suggesting dates stuffed with nut butter.
My current fave snacks are:
Greek yogurt mixed w/chocolate protein powder & granola
Julie's Organic Frozen Yogurt bars (strawberry)
Honeycrisp apples & cheese
Justin's Cinnamon Peanut Butter
Kashi Blackberry Graham cereal bars
I'm sorry I didn't comment about The Things yesterday, but I'm glad you got them taken care of. My recommendation was going to be to give yourself a major Netflix or Hulu project, like watching all seasons of Battlestar Galactica or Lost from start to finish.
18 rabbits is one of my favorite snacks - tastes like what you expect a granola bar to taste like, in my opinion....
Okay, going to try to find these bars--your description sounds great.
Favorite snacks? Someone just asked me this on MY blog! So stay tuned. I am definitely with you on the snacking thing though--I would be in a horrible place ED-wise if I didn't snack, not to mention that D would have probably divorced me since I get SUPER cranky without snacks! I eat 2 snacks/day (sometimes 3) and then do 3 smallish meals. My calorie needs are on the lower end but I tend to eat a lot of low-calorie foods so I need the snacks!
Also, I enjoyed your rodeo post. I went to a rodeo when I was 12 and was horrified to find out how they get the bulls to jump around. I think it's pretty cruel. I don't mind the horse events though (like barrel racing for example) because I used to ride, and I think that horses really like being interacted with and training to do those events.
Why do hands always look so huge in pictures?! I'm glad it's not just me!
thanks for ideas on snacks. . and the review. Is it just me, or is the name 18 Rabbits too freakin' adorable?!
I'm just read this now, though I know I posted yesterday on your most recent post. Anyway, also want to say glad that "the thing" issue went okay. My dad had melanoma 5 or so years ago with some bad complications, so it can really be scary.
I have this one mole on my face (I like to call it my :"Cindy Crawford mole), and new derms are always asking about it. But it's been there forever and never changed appearance. It's just good to keep on top of these things.
As for this post, yeah ,I remember Sophia talking about this on her blog. They look very tasty. I guess I don't food blog enough, because I'd love to get samples of this stuff!
Although I do snack now, for a long time, I would not, though I didn't eat much of a "meal" either. Everything was "pesudoe-meal" for me. Now, as snacks, I like to eat bars (clif, clif z, luna bars, kashi bars, bananas, honey roasted almonds, esp. in yogurt, fruit, pb & marshmallow fluff, animal crackers)
Those 18 Rabbits bars look great - I'd not heard of them before. Have you ever tasted the RYVITA Fruit & Seed Crunch (crackers)? I love them! I also like ice cream!
